This year I was sent to AU to see what was in store for the fabrication (MAP) products and to also look at Revit.

I influence purchasing though I don't write the checks. We have been to several of the TSI user groups over the past few years.Ĭurrently have 4 CAD, 2 EST, 1 CAM, 3 Tracker and 3 Remote licenses. We are a pre-TSI user/owner so I've had little contact with TSI - we've always been pretty much self-sufficient. We are under increasing pressure from our customers to provide a 'revit' deliverable/solution to meet BIM requirements. We currently use CAD, CAM, EST, Trackit and Remote Entry. No TSI, all is not forgiven and it will not be. Sooner or later AD will also create imperial libraries and metric-inch libraries and then no one needs BD.

Not only that but if you have one of the Ultimate Design Suites and are on subscription this new functionality will be free and you already have all of the items. It is very clear that they are interested in world domination and if it makes things easier thats okay. Right now that's good enough.ĪD will bring Fabrication into Revit. I am told we can export to Revit MEP and we can bring in Revit MEP and we can bring in AutoCAD MEP files.

I looked at and used the other software out there for piping and nothing comes close to this. You put in a bug report and they actually call you back.ĪD is the dominant player by far. I have never been an Autodesk fanboy but I think they have done a good thing here. Its still not really right but at least its usable.

I recall when they brought the drivers for 3DxWare in and broke every single 3D mouse by 3Dconnexion and it took 4 years to fix it. To be clear, the only reason I recommended this product to my employers was because Autodesk bought it.ĭoes Autodesk do everything right? Hell no. While we still had to deal with the single vendor I knew this would change. I figured correctly that this would eventually be better supported and it became a no brainer to buy this product. I decided that we would look at other products and started evaluating. Arrogant does not even begin to describe it. I had seen CADmech at a different firm and brought it into the previous one and was again prepared to talk to the only reseller available. I was hired by this firm to restart their drafting department which was completely idle. Right on!! We were doing the same thing at the time. So the "seminar" turned into one long sales pitch for Building Data instead. We attended a local "Seminar" for the SysQue product back in June just to give it a fair assessment of its Revit-to-fabrication functionality (which was one of the selling points for the "seminar"), only to be told that this feature was still in "beta" and would not be part of the demonstration for this "seminar". Sure, we could spend even MORE money (further inflating our overhead) for another THIRD PARTY software (SQ), and then we still have the additional burden of implementing (and procuring) Revit. Currently a Revit model would have to be redeveloped in AutoCAD in order to generate the maj file for fabrication. Now if Autodesk could only develop a straight-line path from Revit to Cam they would be on to something.

That sealed the deal for us, especially as Autodesk resellers began to be "Qualified" as resellers for these products and has allowed us to cut or support costs by at least 40% (or more) when compared to the support costs of our previous (and only) reseller. CADmep used to be a separate product that cost EXTRA.Īutodesk went even further by offering an "amnesty" period for those users whose support had lapsed (ours was over four years out of support) to renew their support without penalty to get their software up to date.

Then consider that CADmep functionality has been rolled into CADmep. Originally only one post processor would be included and any additional post processors used to cost EXTRA. On the CAMduct side ALL of the burn table post processors were enabled by Autodesk, as well as ALL of the decoilers. This included ABS Convert, Item Scripting (yes scripting was an OPTION that cost EXTRA), and they had begun to break out piping and electrical libraries as EXTRAS that had always been included in the past, which are now again included (as they should be). Autodesk added a lot of value to the product, especially by eliminating the "a la carte" pricing structure for the dongle options. We were looking hard for alternative solutions when Autodesk bought CADduct.
